ICBRKR EXTRAORDINAIRES: Meet Alex Zhang, Art Director of Summit

Welcome to our ICBRKR Extraordinaires Series, where we periodically highlight one extraordinary ICBRKR. Our community is our backbone, and we’re proud to bring together such a passionate and engaging group of people. ICBRKR: MEET YOUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY. ⚡️

This week, we introduce you to Art Aficionado, Music Lover and Urban Explorer, Alex Zhang. As Art Director for Summit, he is behind the curation of all the amazing installations you see at Summit’s events, like the Tropical Space Hostel we introduced at Summit Tulum this May. We love his vibe and are honored to count him as part of our ICBRKR Extraordinaires. Get to know him below and connect with him in the ICBRKR app!

Alex, please tell us more about what you do? How did you end up curating art for Summit?

Art by Olafur Elliasson and James Turrell, respectively.

I am the Art Director for Summit and have the fortune of collaborating with inspiring, challenging artists to create memorable experiences throughout our events. I fell backwards into the Arts with no formal training or framework as I worked for Jeff Rosenthal, one of our founders and Creative Director for Summit, and naturally found a huge passion in the Art vertical. I find my unconventional approach results in a more unique outcome by often challenging the artists to push their boundaries and scope.

I’ve always viewed my role as an Art Director as more of an assistant to the artist, helping support and develop their artistic concepts when I can, and presenting context as it relates to audience, resources, and environment.

Art by Kambui Olujimi and Cai Guo Qiang, respectively.

Amazing. We love what you achieve with it. Who are your favorite artists?

My all-time favorites:

  • James Turrell

  • Cai Guo Qiang

  • Yayoi Kusama

  • Tomsa Saraceno

  • Olafur Elliason

Those I’ve been really into lately:

  • Zina Saro-Wiwa

  • Kambui Olujimi

  • Glenn Kaino

Oooh, so many to check out! What about your favorite song and city?

My favorite song: “Ponte de Areia” by Wayne Shorter.

Favorite city: Mexico City because it feels like nature is reclaiming the city. Food, art, culture, and beautiful, kind people don't hurt either!

We couldn’t agree more! How about ICBRKR, what do you love most about it?

Summit has always been a community for community gatherers, bringing together organizers from all disciplines. ICBRKR's approach to thoughtful community building with like-minded people around the world is both inspiring and needed. I also enjoy ICBRKR's fun and refreshing approach to connection and curation.

Thanks, Alex! Last q: What is your guilty pleasure?

The occasional cigarette and Kacey Musgraves.

AWESOME. Thanks for your time, Alex! We look forward to more Summit x ICBRKR collaborations in the future.
