Andreea, can you please tell us more about what you do? How did you end up in music?
My background is actually in tech, and I've always worked at the intersection of music and digital. I got my official music start with streaming service Mixcloud but I was unofficially involved in music earlier on through my student side hustle as a photographer at underground parties in London. In all honesty, it was just a way to get into parties for free but I'm glad it turned into something bigger than that.
Community building is obviously a priority for you, hence your launch of shesaid.so. What inspired you to start your company and how have things changed since you began?
Given my experience in tech and music, I noticed both industries were struggling with community building. However, while tech was at least acknowledging this and trying to work out solutions, no one was talking about the clear lack of diversity or obvious sexism taking place in music. It was all ignored or talked about behind closed doors so as not to risk your career from being destroyed by daring to question the status quo. I started shesaid.so with the very intent of changing that and I'm happy to stay things have improved considerably since I started this journey in September 2014.
That is amazing, and we stand by you all the way! You mentioned you’re a Music Lover (obviously!) and Urban Explorer. What is your favorite song, and favorite city in the world?
My favorite song is ‘Goodbye Horses’ by Q Lazzarus.
My favorite city is a tough one. I'll have to say Valencia. I'm in love with Spain, its food and its slow pace - after living in London for almost 7 years, I'm starting to love the slower life. Valencia is packing the best of Spain, inclusive of architecture, urbanism, culture, food and sun. Next time I'll probably say Istanbul because I hear incredible things. Alas, I haven't managed to get there yet.
Only fools never change their minds! ;) What do you love most about ICBRKR?
ICBRKR allows me to do what I do with shesaid.so but on a social level. As you can tell, I'm obsessed with community and connecting with people, in general, and ICBRKR helps me find new friends that I already know I'm going to be on the same page with because we're part of this online community of like-minded people.
Yes, it really does feel like we’re kindred spirits! Last question: what is your guilty pleasure?
I'd say weed but I don't consider it something I should feel guilty about! So instead, FRIES on FRIES on FRIES.
Own it! Thanks for chatting with us about your impressive mission and congrats on how far you’ve come, Andreea! Good luck with your event next week, and hope to see you at future ICBRKR events.
