ICBRKR EXTRAORDINAIRES: Meet DJ Carlita, Multicultural DJ & Producer

Welcome to our ICBRKR Extraordinaires Series, where we periodically highlight one extraordinary ICBRKR. Our community is our backbone, and we’re proud to bring together such a passionate and engaging group of people. ICBRKR: MEET YOUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY. ⚡️

This week, we introduce you to Music Lover and Global Explorer, DJ Carlita. A classically-trained, multicultural DJ and producer from Turkey, Carlita’s music blends Middle Eastern and Latin American cultures with her spiritual, tropical, psychedelic style. She’s DJ’ed around the world, including at multiple ICBRKR events, and we absolutely love her. Experience Carlita’s free spirit in our interview below and keep your eyes peeled in the app for her next ICBRKR gig.

Carlita, tell us more about what you do and how you got into it?

I am a music producer and DJ. I grew up in Turkey, listening to my mother’s Brazilian and Jazz CDs. My musical journey started at 3 years old with the piano, followed by the cello when I was 8. I attended both a Turkish conservatory and the Royal Academy of Music in London to become a classically trained cello player. I was always very into sounds and loved Rock music as a teenager, despite my classical background. After London, I decided to study Business and moved to Boston for my education. During my free time in college, I created journey-filled playlists for friends and other people on SoundCloud. One friend in Boston showed me her small DJ’ing machine and I got super into it right away. I quickly started spinning at some local venues -- Bijou, in Boston, was the first one -- and never stopped!

A natural-born star! What inspires your music, and who are your role model DJs?

I am inspired by many genres of music from Rock, Jazz, and 80ths synth to New Wave, Brazilian music, and Techno. I find something to blend in many kinds of music.

My role model DJs are: Kaz James, Jamie Jones, DJ Tennis, Goldcap.

If you can pick one, what would you say is your favorite musical genre?

Rock and Roll.

You’ve also dubbed yourself a Global Explorer. What’s your favorite city?

Lisbon, Portugal.

Both great choices! And what do you like most about ICBRKR?

I like its features. It’s nice to read about the community, locations, and what’s in right now. And I find connecting with people who are around me very useful as well.

Finally, what is your guilty pleasure?

I still watch cartoons on Netflix :)

Amazing, Carlita, thanks for giving us a glimpse into what makes you, you! We look forward to dancing the night away together at many ICBRKR events.
