ICBRKR EXTRAORDINAIRES: Meet Holger Hecler, DJ & Music Producer

Welcome to our ICBRKR Extraordinaires Series, where we periodically highlight one extraordinary ICBRKR. Our community is our backbone, and we’re proud to bring together such a passionate and engaging group of people. ICBRKR: MEET YOUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY. ⚡️

This week, we introduce you to Music Lover, Fellow Foodie and Global Explorer, Holger Hecler. A music producer and DJ from Berlin, Holger has been called a visionary, a perfectionist, and wanderer of worlds. At ICBRKR, we’ve followed his music at Kater Blau, Garbicz and Burning Man, and we cannot get enough. So much so that we’ve invited him to spin at ICBRKR’s Intergalactic Space party this Friday! Get to know Holger below and join us on March 13th to celebrate our 1-year anniversary in London.

Holger, we love you and your sound, and we’re so excited you’ll be DJ’ing our 1-year London anniversary. Tell us, how did you get into music, and what inspired you most?

My parents originally come from some small villages in the south east of Germany, and my grandfather (my father’s father) was kind of a role model for me. He was a solo entertainer by heart. Whenever there was a wedding, birthday or any other celebration in one of these villages, he was the guy playing the music — not as a DJ, but as a live performer, playing the piano and singing. My father sometimes played alongside him; he plays quite a fair trumpet.

I started getting into the world of DJing at the age of 16, when I went to a Jungle/Drum & Bass party in a small club in Berlin. This was a sound I’d never heard before and I was instantly hooked. The week after that weekend, I went to almost every record store in Berlin to find this kind of music and bought my first vinyls. My career first began in Drum & Bass then, not yet as a DJ, but as an MC, rapping and singing to the tunes the DJs were playing. But I always wanted to get behind the decks and eventually I did.

Together with a close friend, I started to play a mix of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Disco, House, Electronic, Reggae… everything that we were digging and that kept the people dancing. We did this as a team for many years, but I felt a little more drawn to the Electronic side of what we were playing. That’s when I began to spin as a solo artist under the name Holger Hecler, creating my own sound. At this time, a couple of great artists and I started to experiment with the tempo of the Electronic music being played in clubs. We would slow it way down and play with it, mixing all kinds of stuff from around the world as well as treasures from the past. Somehow, this created a new sound, a new genre, or better new genres, that became popular, and here we are now… :)

And it doesn’t stop there, right? Tell us about your second passion!

Besides the music, I’ve always been interested in doing other things too: starting a business, working in different fields — basically finding the right balance in life. In the end it found me. Two years ago, I was asked to become the CEO of a small NGO that supports educational projects for children, mainly in underdeveloped countries or for children in need.

Our main project is in Brazil where the organisation founded a school for street children. The school is in the state Bahia, one of the poorest regions of Brazil. Here we provide the children with education, activities including sports, theatre, and music, as well as food and clothing. When I am there, I live a very simple life, very different from fancy hotels and parties. It’s beautiful though and I enjoy the contrast.

I am very grateful for how my life unfolds, and having two jobs that serve to actually make other people happy.

So inspiring, and everything ICBRKR stands for! Speaking of which, what would you say you like most about ICBRKR?

I think it’s a powerful tool that connects people sharing the same friends, interests and ideals. Many of us travel a lot and wake up in different places all the time; ICBRKR helps keep track of which of your friends are around, and even your friends’ friends.

Time for a few quick-fire questions to finish: what is your favorite city, and why?

Istanbul: Food, people, Bosporus

Berlin: Hometown, unpretentious, endless parties

Hamburg: Home, harbor, Hafenkneipen :)

Favorite food?

Sushi & seafood in general.

Favorite song?

That is impossible to answer :) But a song I absolutely dig at the moment is: Night Tapes - Space Force (feat. Will Haff).

Guilty pleasure?

Too much beer.

Cheers! Or rather, Prost! Can’t wait to travel to space and beyond with you on Friday, March 13th in London. Thanks for sharing your story with us, Holger!
