ICBRKR EXTRAORDINAIRES: Meet Marina Pengilly, Serial Entrepreneur and Fashtech Groundbreaker

Welcome to our ICBRKR Extraordinaires Series, where we periodically highlight one extraordinary ICBRKR. Our community is our backbone, and we’re proud to bring together such a passionate and engaging group of people. ICBRKR: MEET YOUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY. ⚡️

Today, we introduce you to Art Aficionado, Global Explorer, and Fellow Foodie, Marina Pengilly. A lifelong entrepreneur, Marina has started many successful businesses. Her latest project is Little Black Door, a groundbreaking effort to make fashion more sustainable while channeling the power of community and technology. Find out what inspired Marina throughout her career in our interview below, and be sure to try Little Black Door to socialize your wardrobe.

Marina, let’s start by talking about what you do. What is your background, and what are you up to now?

I am an entrepreneur through and through. I started my first business, Who Loves You, when I was 22 years old and we had a number of cafés around London. After that, I started a retail consultancy, where I helped smaller brands launch in the UK. During this time, I worked with a number of tech businesses; I LOVED the energy, innovation and the fast pace of this sector. It inspired me! This fundamentally led me to form a fashtech business, Little Black Door, with my former boss. We are a new-to-market, social wardrobe app that is out to get women using, sharing and selling the contents of their closets. We are super excited about it and have been getting a lot of amazing traction.

We’re excited about it too! What inspired you to go into fashtech?

Sustainability is actually the core tenant to our business. We wanted to build a business that had a positive impact on our users and the environment. We make it a habit for users to be sustainable by prolonging the life cycle of their clothing in a convenient way. I love looking at our daily stats because I am seeing our users reusing, borrowing and selling their clothes in real-time.

Equally, we wanted to build a brand that empowers people. Through LBD, every user’s wardrobe becomes a place where you can express your creativity through styling, and dive into your entrepreneurial mojo via selling through the app.

Brilliant. We know you’re also passionate about wellness and spirituality. Can you tell us more about that?

I used to own a wellness brand and I loved it; however, going into my 30s, I have embraced spirituality. My health is still my main priority, but my wellness routine has become habitual. My continual study of spirituality has brought so much light and positivity into my life. I am forever learning more about it, about myself, and this excites me! I am no longer fueled by anxiety, but rather peace.

Amen. We’re all about inner well being and positivity at ICBRKR. Speaking of which, what is your favorite part about ICBRKR?

Community is EVERYTHING! I love that I am being connected with like-minded individuals in such a cool and innovative way. We all at some point in our lives can get stuck in a friendship rut where it is rare to meet new people, and COVID-19 has just made this worse. ICBRKR is my go-to solution. I have made life long friendships through this platform, and I can’t wait to make more.

As a Global Explorer, what is your favorite city and why?

Buenos Aires, Argentina. I love it because it makes me feel as though I have gone back in time; everything is so slow-paced and the buildings that surround you were built centuries ago. It is known to be the Paris of LatAm, and you can really see this through the architecture that runs through the city. The food is absolutely delicious, and the shopping, well you leave needing another suitcase...

Healthy problems! How about your favorite food?

Anything mushroom related. I have a weakness for truffles.

And since you’re also an Art Aficionado, what’s your favorite place to enjoy art?

The Musée d'Orsay is my second home.

Finally, what is your guilty pleasure?

Tequila and coffee.

Good mix! We loved hearing about your journey, Marina, and we can’t wait to see Little Black Door break important fashion boundaries.
