JENNIFER'S TRAVEL DIARY: MAGICAL GREECE
Two weeks ago, I returned from one of the best summer vacations I have ever had… in Greece! As many of you ICBRKRs have seen on Instagram, Greece is a summer hot spot for jetsetters, lovers, and friends alike. This summer I was invited to a wedding in Nafplio and decided to see for myself why Greece is so magical.
I arrived in Athens and checked into Athenwas Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel near the Acropolis. Its rooftop restaurant has an incredible view of the Acropolis at night, which lights up like the Eiffel Tower. The food was delicious but being able to reunite with a local university friend was even better. The next day, I hiked up to the Acropolis bright and early to skip the crowds and saw beautiful 360-degree views of the city and the Parthenon.
A scenic 2-hour drive from Athens landed me in Nafplio. I stopped by a local seaside taverna, Tsakiris for some fresh caught grilled sardines, shrimp, and of course, a Greek salad before heading to Palamidi Fortress where I saw the most magnificent views of Nafplio. Nafplio is really a hidden gem for Athenians to escape to for the weekend. At night, I attended my first big fat Greek wedding, which was held at the Evagelistria Church and the Nafplio Palace Hotel where we celebrated with mastiha, traditional Greek food, and lots of Greek dancing!
I woke up seaside to the beautiful views of Nafplio and headed back to Athens to catch a flight to Santorini. I checked into Katikies Hotel in the famous town of Oia. The hotel is part of The Leading Hotels of the World, and it certainly lived up to its title. The service was outstanding and the views were jaw dropping. For the next few days, I soaked up the sun in the infinity pool while staring at the views, dined at Ammoudi Fish Tavern, Ambrosia, and Lefkes, and walked into town to see the famous blue domed church. But nothing beat my day on a catamaran cruising around the island with the sails up, enjoying the views of the many different colored beaches and the caldera and jumping into the crisp blue ocean. What a beautiful island!
Last stop was Mykonos, known for its turquoise waters and beach clubs. I checked into Branco Hotel, recommended by my Athenian friend for its luxury, boho beach club vibes. It sits on the water in Platis Gialos, where I spent most of my mornings relaxing on a sunbed and enjoying the DJ’s vibrant beats. My favorite 3pm lunch was at Principote, the food was outstanding especially their famous Bougatsa for dessert. Other restaurants worth mentioning are Spilia for its live sea urchin, Kounelas for its day caught grilled sea bass, and Kalita for its refined Greek food. In the evening, just 15 minutes away from Branco is the trendy Scorpios beach club where I spent many hours enjoying the sunset, food, and music by Rampue and Be Svendsen.
Experience the magic for yourself, ICBRKRs.
