It’s not only the most important meal of the day, breakfast (and brunch!) is also the best meal of the day. At least we think so, and to celebrate its deliciousness and diversity, here are ICBRKR’s top recommended breakfasts in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami.

New York

There are too many places to name, so we’re being a bit cheeky with 3 picks for Manhattan and Brooklyn each. :)

Manhattan

ABC Kitchen: From the vision of Michelin star Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, ABC Kitchen is one of those places that delights both the eyes and the taste buds. Their fresh ingredients and inventive recipes will leave you wanting more… which you can get at their sister restaurant ABC Cocina -- also well worth a visit.

Locanda Verde: Go Italian with this brunch in TriBeCa, located in Robert De Niro’s Greenwich Hotel. Chef Andrew Carmellini’s menu is heaven for brunch, lunch and dinner, but we just love his Uova in Purgatorio, Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, and monkey bread.

La Mercerie: This French dining heaven, run by Chef Marie-Aude Rose, is also on the fancier side, but well worth the visit. Pastries, tartines, eggs… we want everything on their breakfast menu, and so will you!

Brooklyn

Okonomi: Try a traditional Japanese breakfast at this small and delightful restaurant in Brooklyn. With an eye towards minimizing waste and appreciating what is given as per the Mottainai philosophy, Okonomi’s vibe will leave you feeling fully refreshed, inside and out.

Five Leaves: Ricotta Pancakes... Yes, please! Sage Scrambled Egg Sandwich... On the way! House Cured Arctic Char... Need we say more? You’ll need to either go with a big group and share or come back several times to enjoy everything Five Leaves’ breakfast menu has to offer.

Buttermilk Channel: Named after the mile-long tidal strait between Brooklyn and Governor’s Island, Buttermilk Channel offers the best weekend brunch in Carroll Gardens. Try their Fried Pork Chop & Cheddar Waffles, a definite foodie favorite.

Los Angeles

République. Photo from Yelp

République: Named a “culinary nirvana” in this review by The Infatuation, Republique checks all the brunch boxes and more. Amazing decor, mouth-watering menu and taste bud-delighting dishes… this place is well worth the long lines and uber-hype.

Gjelina: With restaurants opening every two minutes (approximate value) in LA, sometimes it’s nice to go to an old staple. Gjelina has been on the map for over 10 years, and it’s just as good now as it was back then. Their menu provides lots of options for picky eaters, and hell, if you’re gonna have pizza for breakfast, this is the place to go.

A.O.C.: Another long-standing staple in the LA restaurant scene is A.O.C., run by the fabulous duo that is Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne. Specializing in wine and small plates, A.O.C. has a delicious brunch menu that includes one of our faves: wood-oven baked eggs with chickpeas, cavalo nero, feta & sumac. Yum.

San Francisco

The Bandit sandwich from Bandit.

Bandit: Rethink your typical brunch and go with Bandit’s amazing breakfast sandwiches. All served with organic eggs and Bandit’s signature aioli on their mouth-melting brioche buns, these sandwiches will steal your heart and your taste buds… pun intended.

Plow: Dubbed on their website as “Midwest country boy meets San Francisco China girl,” Plow is one of those places you just feel at home in right away. Add a buttermilk biscuit and you’ll never want to leave.

Foreign Cinema: No fabulous foodie can go to San Francisco and not stop by Foreign Cinema for a meal. Consistently one of the top-ranked restaurants in SF, Foreign Cinema combines Chefs Gayle Pirie and John Clark visions of food, wine, cocktails, film and art into one harmonious experience. Breakfast bonus: Pirie and Clark love eggs and even wrote a book -- Country Egg, City Egg -- on the many glorious ways you can prepare them.

Miami

Jaya at The Setai Hotel: Our go-to Miami brunch is at the beautiful Setai Hotel in Miami Beach. Their restaurant, Jaya, offers a scrumptious breakfast menu and buffet that satisfies any breakfast craving at the core.
